Marriage troubles don’t always mean fights

Violence, abuse and high levels of conflict are all signs of trouble in a marriage. They are all potential reasons to get divorced.

Nonetheless, these aren’t the only ways that a relationship can break down. Sometimes, a relationship that is in real trouble will not involve any fights at all. Here are a few things to consider.

Avoiding each other

Spouses should have their own space. This can be a good thing. However, a couple should also spend valuable time together. Even if this is one or two days per week, it can help to maintain a happy relationship. When a couple no longer goes out together or partakes in joint activities at home, this could be an issue. An unhappy spouse will often avoid the other and the longer this goes on for, the more detached the couple becomes.

Sometimes, rather than engaging in fights, a spouse will give the other the “silent treatment”. At first glance, this may not sound like abuse, but it certainly can be. Treatment like this can be used as a form of unjust punishment and manipulation.

Lack of intimacy

Most marriages are not romantic all the time, but it is important that a certain level of romance and intimacy are maintained. Over the years, some married couples find that the dynamic of their relationship shifts. They may not fight, but they also have no intimate moments. Many relationships break down due to the relationship changing into more of a friendship or roommate situation.

If you feel like your marriage is in trouble, it’s important to think about your options. Seeking legal guidance can help you learn more about divorce.
